What is "Night Fires"?

”Night Fires” is a winter solstice celebration for our times, rooted in ancient traditions: an “opera” with poetry and dance, a pageant rich in color, image and spirit.

"A heartfelt pageant of singing, dancing, storytelling, chanting and visual magic...(with) a mystery to its magic...

"A liturgy of universality (with) an almost sacramental power.

"...afterward, audience members wish they could remember all those marvelous poems and songs and store them up like firewood for cold nights.

"People come as spectators and leave as members of a community."

2008
All good things come to an end (well, all bad things do, too, but hopefully what I speak of here is good!).

In 1982, Night Fires began – a dream I had. Over the years it’s changed, grown considerably -- nurtured by the talents, love and labor of some fierce fellow travelers I met along the road. For me it has been a most magnificent gift – one of the sweetest gifts of my life -- to be able to dream of this and then to do it: to do this with people I loved and respected and loved working with; to watch quite a few kids “grow up” in “Night Fires”; to have had some few renegade souls in the audience come to love it and return each year to be warmed by the solstice stories we offered.

Now it’s time for others to seize this dream, if they will – or to seed a similar one. Or it’s simply the right time for this sweet thing to come to its natural end. The 2007 performances marked the end of “Night Fires” as it has existed until now. There will be no performances in 2008. If it continues in some form after that, new hands will be needed – ones willing to take up all or some of the reins I’ve held till now and also to provide a broader and more substantial creative base and support system.

Until that possible time, check this web-site for future up-dates.
